Dundalk Middle School
Advancement Via Individual Determination
(AVID)
AVID is a school wide program where teachers volunteer to use instructional strategies that increase rigor while providing structures to increase students' success. Dundalk Middle School is working-on becoming one of the first AVID middle schools in Baltimore County. AVID program essentials include:
The AVID program provides a year-long elective class within the regular academic school day.
AVID students must be enrolled in a rigorous course study that will enable them to begin a college preparatory course sequence (including algebra or equivalent) when they enter high school.
A strong, relevant writing and reading curriculum provides a basis for instruction in the AVID elective class.
Inquiry is used as a basis for instruction in the AVID classroom.
Collaboration is used as a basis for instruction in the AVID classroom.
Trained tutors must be available in the AVID class.
AVID program implementation and student progress must be monitored through the AVID Data System, and results must be analyzed to ensure success.
An active, interdisciplinary site team collaborates on issues of student access to and success in rigorous college preparatory courses.
