Dundalk Middle School's Summer 2009 Reading
"A good book is the best of friends, the same today and forever."
- Martin Farquhar Tupper (1810-1889)
Families who read and learn together provide the strongest model for future reading and learning. Our mission is to provide a quality education that develops the content, knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enable all students to reach their maximum potential as responsible, life-long learners and productive citizens. It is with this idea in mind that we have developed programs and guidelines for summer reading and writing experiences. Students have some options with our summer reading program.
Option 1: Complete the Baltimore County Public Library Summer Reading Activity
Turn a copy of your completed BCPL sheet in to your homeroom teacher. You may get a copy of the BCPL Summer Reading activity sheet at the North Point branch of the Public Library. Also, you may find more information about the BCPL summer reading program at http://bcplonline.org/kidspage/kids_src_teenzine.html
Option 2: Read a Novel that is Age-Appropriate
You may pick any age-appropriate novel of your choosing. The 2009-2010 Black-Eyed Susan books are highly recommended.
If you choose option 2, then complete one of the projects listed below:
Project A: NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
Pretend you are a writer for a newspaper. Report on the major event of your novel. Include the who, what, when, where, why, and how. Also, include quotes from at least three characters that you “interview” for the article. Don’t forget a catchy headline.
Project B: T-Shirt
Make a T-shirt advertising the novel you read. Include the title, author, a two-sentence summary, and an image or design related to the book. Your T-shirt should be neat, attractive to the eye, and edited for spelling and other mistakes.
Grading
This assignment is worth 50 extra credit points in your language arts class. You will also be invited to an ice cream social hosted by the principal!
Turn your project in to your homeroom teacher. Do not forget to write your name and grade level on your project. This will be due at the end of September.
