Dundalk Middle School's Summer Reading

Families who read and learn together provide the strongest model for future reading and learning. Our mission is to provide a quality education that develops the content, knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enable all students to reach their maximum potential as responsible, life-long learners and productive citizens. It is with this idea in mind that we have developed programs and guidelines for summer reading and writing experiences. To keep their skills fresh over the summer, your child is receiving a folder which contains summer activities in the following content areas:

Reading/Language Arts: Research has established that children who participate in summer reading programs show an increase in their love for reading, their vocabulary development, and their comprehension skills.  Baltimore County Public Schools supports summer reading for all students. Our local library has outstanding summer reading programs with built-in rewards for students. Students should select one novel from the list provided. After reading, students will reflect on their experiences by completing the assignments provided.

Math: The problems included in these activities are secure skills that students have mastered during the year. Included with the summer mathematics activity is a resource sheet with hints, websites and books that can be referenced (and are available at Baltimore County Public Libraries) should your child have a question or need a little "boost" to complete a problem. Please encourage your child to explain their thinking, to justify their work and to have fun with this activity!

Science: Students can become fascinated with the mysteries of the Earth's interior and exterior, the wonderful variety of living things, the complexities of the human body, and the magic of chemistry and physics. The activities in this science packet will allow students to increase their comfort level with skills, facts, and understandings of science concepts they will encounter in the fall. These activities can be completed with the assistance of the internet or books from the library. Please encourage your child to do their best and to have fun as they learn about the many concepts of science.

Work together with your child to learn and explore this summer. Keep in mind that all content area teachers will collect these responses in September 2008.
